Schrenker Faked Death to Escape Financial Trouble

Wealthy business owner and money manager Marcus Schrenker made headlines in January 2009, when he attempted to escape the consequences of frauding investors by parachuting out of his small one-engine prop plane in an attempt to fake his death. At one time, Marcus Schrenker had everything. He owned three investment consulting firms, lived with his wife and children in the exclusive Indianapolis suburb of Geist, in a $3 million dollar waterfront home that had a dock and a large swimming pool. Flying was a hobby of his and he owned two aircraft which he used to go on lavish vacations. But in January 2009, it all came crashing down. Idyllic Life on the Outside Marcus Schrenker was born on November 22, 1970.   He grew up in Merrillville, Indiana which is located in the Chicago metropolitan area. In 1989 Schrenker graduated from Merrillville High School, and then went to college at Purdue University. It was at Purdue that he met (former wife) Michelle, married and together they had three children together. As idyllic as the Schrenkers life appeared, there was also a dark side that those who lived with Marcus or around him were very aware of to the point of feeling discomfort when he was around. Schrenker would go from being friendly and charismatic to angry, unreasonable and combative. And, according to his neighbor Tom Britt in an interview with abcnews.go.com, episodes of this type of erratic behavior became more frequent as he grew older. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Schrenker did what many with this disorder do, he would often stop taking his medication, and Michelle, their children, and investors would end up paying the price. Savvy Financial Investor Turned Crook Schrenker owned three financial companies: Heritage Wealth Management, Heritage Insurance Services, and Icon Wealth Management.   His wife Michelle was paid $11,600 as the chief financial officer of the three companies and bookkeeper. She was also on the bank account of Heritage Insurance Services, which gave her the authority to write checks and withdraw money. But in 2008 Schrenker was under investigation in Indiana after several complaints were lodged by some of his investors, upset with how he was handling their money. Friends, the parents of friends and neighbors were among the investors that filed complaints. Michelle had also filed for divorce on December 20, 2008, after learning of her husbands infidelities with a woman who worked at the airport. Investors Supported Lavish Lifestyle Unknown to Schrenker, he had been under investigation for 10 years for various lawsuits that had been filed against him. Then on December 31, 2008, state investigators armed with a search warrant, seized computers, several plastic tubs filled with paperwork, the Schrenkers passports, over $6,000 in cash, and the title to a Lexus, from the Schrenkers home. On January 6, 2009, Schrenker was charged with unlawful acts by a compensated adviser and unlawful transaction by an investment adviser. Bail was set at $4 million.   According to Jim Atterholt, who was the State Insurance Commissioner, Schrenker charged investors exorbitant surrender charges after he moved them out of one annuity and into another. The investors were not told in advance about the fees.   Three days later, on January 9, Schrenkers company Heritage Wealth Management Inc. was issued a $533,500 judgment after a federal court in Maryland ruled in favor of OM Financial Life Insurance Co. The lawsuit contended that Heritage Wealth Management was involved in insurance irregularities and should have returned commissions of more than $230,000. Plane Crash   On Sunday, January 11, 2009, Schrenker flew off from an airfield in Anderson, Indiana in his single-engine Piper. He listed his destination as Destin, Florida. As he neared Birmingham, Alabama, he put out a fake mayday signal and told air traffic controllers that he had been badly injured and was bleeding profusely after the windshield of the plane imploded.Afterward, he put the plane on autopilot and parachuted out. Military jets attempting to intercept the plane reported that the door of the plane was opened, and the cockpit was dark and appeared empty. The jets followed the unmanned plane which crashed over 200 miles later in a swamp in Santa Rosa County, Florida, around 50 yards from a residential area.   After the crash, the plane was found somewhat intact. Investigators searched the plane and reported that there was no blood inside of it and the windshield was completely intact. Authorities put out a warrant for Schrenker arrest. On the Run Schrenker plan was to fake his death and make a run for it. On January 10, the day before he parachuted out of his plane, he drove to Harpersville, Alabama and stashed a motorcycle, money and other supplies in a storage facility. He informed the owner of the facility that he would return Monday. Once Schrenker parachuted to the ground, he made it to Childersburg, Alabama, where at 2:30 a.m. he asked for help from a private resident. He told the resident that he had been in a canoeing accident. He was given a ride to the nearest town and went to the local police station.   He gave the police the same story about being in a canoe accident, and after producing his (surprisingly) real identification, the police drove him to a hotel where he registered under a fake name and paid cash for the room. The following morning, after hearing about the plane crash and that Schrenker was on the run, the police returned to the hotel, but he was gone. Schrenker managed to walk undetected to Harpersville and retrieved his motorcycle then rode it a KOA Campground in Quincy, Florida. There he bought a tent site for one night, wood, a six-pack of Bud Light Lime and was given access to the campgrounds wireless access. Embarrassed and Scared On January 12, Schrenker emailed his friend, Tom Britt, and wrote that the crash was a misunderstanding and that he was too embarrassed and scared to return home, so instead checked into the hotel. He went on to say that he would soon be dead.   On the same day, a Hamilton County Superior Court judge froze both Marcus and Michelles assets. Capture The campground owners were contacted by the sheriff, who wanted to know if there was anything unusual going on there. They told the sheriff about the man who had checked in the previous day but had not checked out.  Soon afterward, U.S. marshals swarmed the campground and found Schrenker, barely conscious and incoherent, lying inside the tent. He had lost a lot of blood from a self-inflicted cut on his wrist and an area near his elbow. He was flown to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. On January 13, Schrenker was arrested and charged in federal court in Pensacola, Florida, with deliberately crashing his plane and making a fake distress call.   Trials and Sentencing February 5, 2009A man in Dothan, Alabama was granted $12 million after an Alabama judge ruled in his favor that Schrenker had sold him a defective airplane. June 5, 2009  Schrenker pleaded guilty to intentionally crashing his plane as a way to escape his mounting financial and legal problems. He was sentenced two months later to four years and three months in prison, $34,000 in restitution to the Coast Guard for its search and rescue efforts and $871,000 in restitution to Harley-Davidson, the lienholder of the plane. Schrenker later pleaded guilty to three counts of securities fraud and two counts of working as an investment banker without being registered. He was given a 10-year prison sentence to run consecutively with the previous sentence for the fake plane crash, and he also had to pay $633,781 in restitution. Six Years Later Schrenker was released from prison on September 18, 2015.

Personal Experience Writing a Poem - 986 Words

Before English 1102, I thought writing was a waste of ink. I liked reading other people’s works but I disliked writing the stories myself. I was never good at explaining my ideas clearly and organizing the main ideas for the reader. Also having coherence between and within paragraphs was a struggle. However, as I wrote three unique essays throughout this semester, I realized that writing was a work in progress. It required deeper understanding of the text and the ability to interpret it in my own words by forming a defensive argument. It took time and effort but the final paper was worth it. It showed how I have grown as a writer. Even though I still have many other writing elements to improve on, my organization and coherence in my papers have developed the most. In the first week of English 1102, my professor revealed the Paper 1 prompt. The assignment was straightforward but the word â€Å"poem† worried me. Poems and I never had a good relationship. I had trouble analyzing and therefore forming a concrete thesis based on a poem. So I chose a poem that really interested me so I could â€Å"dig deeper† in my paper. Lies My Teacher Told Me Book Report Essay James Loewen wrote the book Lies My Teacher Told ME to help the students of the United States become aware of their true history. This book attempts to show how and why American history has been taught the way it has without regard for the truth. Mr. Loewen had compared twelve different history textbooks they are: The Great Republic, The American Way, Land of Promise, Rise of the American Nation, Challenge of Freedom, American Adventures, Discovering American History, The American Tradition, Life and Liberty, The United States A History of the Republic, Triumph of the American Nation and The American Pageant. Loewen has argued his cases for Heroification, Euorcentrism and the first settlers, and Racism in our history. He has done this knowing fully that most people do not want to know the harsh realities of our nations past. The United States has tried to maintain a positive image throughout history. Unfortunately, it has many skeletons in its closet that need to come out to heal thi s great nation on many levels. If the public at large new the real role of racism in our nations infancy and how men tried to pursue their way of thinking as opposed to what is good for the country they would be ashamed at what the United States has stood for in the past. Heroification is a degenerative process that makes people into heroes regardless of any type of character flaw they may possess. It appears that Mr. Loewens greatest concern about heroification does not revolve around who gets chosen for the history books but what actually happens to them after they do. He cites two examples of people that had led colored lives but in our textbooks show them as people we should strive to become like. These two people are Helen Keller and President Woodrow Wilson. (Lies19) Mr. Loewen feels that heroification has distorted the lives of Keller and Wilson and that we can no longer think straight about them. He does not just think this of these two but many other people throughout history. When it comes to Keller we think of someone who, throughout her entire life has struggled to overcome her disabilities. I feel that no one would dispute this but in reality Miss Keller was a radical Socialist for most of her life. This in itself is not so bad but her co ndemnation of the country into which she was born to and lived in could be considered treasonous. (Lies20) President Wilson is also an example Loewen used in his book Lies My Teacher Told Me. Current textbooks say that Wilson led the United States reluctantly into World War 1 and associate him with helping progressive causes. (Lies22) Under his administration Wilson intervened in Latin America more often than at any other time in our history. He also led us into an Unknown War (Robert Maddock) that not even one of the twelve textbooks Loewen reviewed mentions. (Lies24) Racial problems also plagued Wilson throughout his Presidency abusing power as Chief Executive he segregated the Federal Government. He appointed whites to offices that were traditionally reserved for black Americans. Also during his second term in office a wave of antiblack race riots swept the country and many blacks had lost their lives. Again these are only two examples amongst countless others which show how the textbooks do not show flaws in historical figures but heroifies them. Euorcentrism is a term that is used in this book to describe how history has been written with its influence mainly from Europe or a European perspective. This unfortunately bases the way history is written and taught for example, textbooks use Christopher Columbus and 1492 as the day the Americas were discovered and by whom. Quite to the contrary the Vikings had landed in North America in approximately 1005 AD, but have been neglected when it comes to being given credit for the discovery. (Lies43) The real catcher to all of this is that the Americas had been inhabited during all of this by Native Indians who supposedly lived here for thousands of years prior to its discovery. (Lies70) One of the big questions that the book tries to answer was why Columbus had been given the credit for the discovery and why the Americas became a place to colonize. The book goes on telling that Columbus is a man of renowned coverage and adventures portrayed in the textbooks. Does this represent a true Columbus or is it a way of heroifying the man to teach all students that yes, you too can do wondrous feats. Giving students the reinforcement needed to be confident is great but is it worth it? Mr. Loewen expresses that it is not. Students and the public at large need to know that failure and character flaws exist in all of us. He also feels that every nationality needs and deserves credit in shaping this nation and not only the Europeans. North America became a breeding ground for racist views and ideology. It all started with the exploitation of the Indians and hopefully ending with the blacks. The Indians were the first to be discriminated against, first by the Spanish then by the colonials. It all started with slavery then it escalated into slaughter and confiscation of their lands and back again to slavery. In the late 19th and early 20th century blacks seem to have the hardest time being accepted by the white man as an equal regardless of their intellect or contribution to society. We have made progress in the latter part of the 20th century in the United States but much still needs to be done to stomp out racism against all peoples. Mr. Loewen in the chapter Why is history taught like this tries to convey various reasons why in fact history is taught this way in our schools. He vacillates between blaming and then exonerating the upper class with their superior (inferred) mentality in influencing authors and publishers for these types of textbooks. (Lies273-276) They may be part to blame in the influence on some subjects however the textbooks on the average are not chosen by these people but by committees who are p art of the countless school systems throughout this great nation. These committees who do chose which textbooks are used in their schools dont actually have the time to read the textbooks but rather they scan through them. This in turn is a major motivator for the publisher to have a book that is flashy and eye catching rather then a textbook that is true to history. Textbooks are also written on the attitudes and social conditions of the time of the author rather then accurate historical facts. (Lies293) Textbooks are being written this way and history is being taught this way to show people how they should act and strive to be. This relays to the student what is deemed acceptable to everyone and what is not. When it comes to a student remembering historical lessons they normally do not remember what is being taught to them unless they are moved by it. (Lies301) So what is the result to a society where our students are being taught this way? The number one result is that students d o not know the true history of their country nor do they remember what they were taught in class. This is a sad conclusion but Mr. Loewen feels it is an accurate one given responses to questions he has asked his students throughout the years. What can we do to change this and reeducate the people out there? Sadly I feel nothing can be done for those of us out there who are not truly aware of this misinformed way of teaching. But, our children need not be sheltered from our true history, rather they should learn all that has happened so we can prevent the atrocities from reoccurring again. The company also applied for a reseller license that is a must for businesses engaging themselves in bridal makeover and wedding ceremonies. The company obtained the permit in the year 2012 and thereafter started its business (Pukall and Calabr 2014). Two of the members in the family were MBAs who carried out a detailed research on the local market. The research was conducted to identify the different competitors in the market and their strategies (De Massis and Kotlar 2014). The research also provided a detailed analysis on the prospects of the bridal market of the country, the different problems that they might face while operating in the market. Detailed information on the statistics of the wedding industry was also obtained during this research. The members of the family assembled at their house and decided on an innovative marketing strategy to launch their business. The main aim of Putri Mas was to capture a healthy market share within a year to achieve reputation in the particular business sector. Putri Mas announced super cheap rates for the first fifty couples who would register themselves and also promised to offer quality bridal services at cheaper rates than the other existing organizations. Having a good supply of raw materials helped Putri Mas in its quest of achieving success in business. The different members of the family were allocated different tasks to arrange for raw materials that were needed for producing bridal costumes. The eldest member of the family with vast experience in event management struck deals with different organizations to arrange and plan marriage ceremonies (Dalpiaz et al. 2014). As mentioned in the beginning of the report the company has its corporate office in Changi road which is considered to be the busiest business centres of Singapore. Having the office in such a prime location of Singapore has helped the organization to attract more customers. Organizational Structures of Family Business An organizational structure involves the definition of the works and activities of the employees in an organization to meet its objectives. The organizational structure personally helps the employees to achieve their own objectives in life (Liu et al. 2015). The organizational structure in a family business can be segregated into different parts, Task division: Dividing the works of the members of the family according to their skills and abilities Coordination: Coordination involves the linkup of the works of the different members of the family so that the organization runs smoothly. Control: The members of the organization must be controlled efficiently so that no internal problems arise within the organization. Data Flow: All the information related to the business must be presented in an organized manner to all members of the organization. The continuous flow of information will help to maintain transparency. Putri Mas is a small scale business establishment engaged in bridal business. Though it is small in nature it faced huge difficulties during its incorporation and operation. Having a small organizational structure thus does not ensure less trouble. The mentioned organization in the following report faced a lot of difficulty while determining its organizational structure. The company decided to take a careful approach so that it can have the best organizational structure (Salvato et al. 2015). The model was fixed on the basis of the particular goals and aims of the business entity. There are a number of organizational structures that were considered to be used at the beginning of the business (Scholes et al. 2015). A simple structure reflecting the natural traits of a manger was considered where the organization would be engaged in maintaining a formal business structure. Apart from the formal structure a strictly personal structure was also considered to be incorporated in the busine ss which was based on only the manager or the head of the company decision (Benavides-Velasco et al. 2013). Putri Mas incorporated the positives of both the models in a hierarchal manner where the leadership and the decision making powers would be passed from one step to the other. The hierarchal process was perhaps one of the best processes to apply as the concerned entity was purely a family business (Cater and Young 2016). The company gained tremendous success after incorporating this particular structure in the business. Research shows that this was mainly because of some unique principles Decentralization: All the important plans and decisions regarding the organization have to be taken after consulting with all the members of the family engaged in the business. Having more officers help the employees to perform much better as they are assigned different tasks at different intervals. Putri Mas has a set of six different managers in charge of looking after the employees of the organization (Walters 2016). Principle of Uniqueness: This principle helps the employees of the organization to work freely as they are free to discuss any of their problems related to work or any other problems that may hamper their work to the managers of the company. The managers or the members of the family in turn can discuss these issues in the meetings of the business. Putri Mas failed in its later stages because they struggled to answer the issues of the employees (Levenburg and Eshbach 2014). The organizational structure of Putri Mas gained popularity in the early days but failed to maintain consistency in the later stages. Lots of issues crept up after the death of the founder which shook the very foundation of the business. The issues have been discussed by the researcher in the next part that will follow. Problems that Arose as a Result of such a Control The structure of family business leads to a number of problems. A death of the founder member of the family, the chairman or the head of the organization can lead to a huge structural change within the organization (Ibrahim et al. 2015). Putri Mas has had the similar kind of problems in the recent past. The time when its founder member died the members tried to hand over the power to the next generation of entrepreneurs which was vehemently opposed by the daughters of the family as they found themselves to be neglected and thought that they might be denied of any further role or share of profit (Koeberle-Schmid et al. 2014). The organization failed to connect the strategy planning to the changes that may occur in the lifecycle of the organization like the death of the family members (Mathews and Blumentritt 2015). Development of the business in terms of strategy must be linked to planning process. In the case of the mentioned organization the son and the grandson of the family felt e motionally attached to the founder member of the business. The business has suffered for this reason as there was a lack of professional ideas and more importance was given to maintain traditional forms of business ideas as contemplated by the founding member (Ibrahim et al. 2015). The son and the grandson of the person thus feared to deviate from such ideas and declined the use of contemporary methods. The business slowly lost the plot in the market because of such a negative feeling. Putri Mas mainly suffered because of the inability of the company head to trust the other members of the family who are in the business. The initial success of the company made him overconfident and he started taking some key decisions all by himself without consulting the other members of the team. This made the other members frustrated and they started questioning on the future of the company. The typical behaviour of the head was because he considered the business to be a plant which was nurtured totally by him. After the death of the head the son found himself to be suddenly the owner of the company and he tried to list the total powers of the organization in his name which raised internal conflicts within the company. The unique problems that Putri Mas faced due to the organizational collapse were: Sudden death of the chief executive of the bridal company Frustration among the members for being neglected in making key decisions Differences with the women members of the organization Absence of a long term planning Aims and objectives of the organization were absent Dispute between the son and the grandson regarding taking up the reigns of the company Financial problems that arose after the death of the head of the business. The members of the business were reluctant to invest once again fearing neglect from the top management of the company Loss of market to other business units. Putri Mas lost its major market to some of the small and large players of the bridal industry as they took the advantage of the organizational failure of the concerned industry Asserting powers to the younger members of the family were a gamble as because some of the younger members made use of the power in wrong way. The company failed to arrange weddings properly because of the failure in its operational structure. The failure in a number of occasions attracted negative reviews from the clients and ultimately loss of reputation. The daughters in the organization opted for a buyout clause of the company. This was not acceptable to the other members of the organization because they wanted to continue the company. The company was also unable to cope up with the market pressure give its use of traditional technologies. This sudden collapse of a vast multinational empire and superpower was virtually unprecedented in world history. These cataclysmic events proved profoundly traumatic for the peoples of the former Soviet Union and for an anxious world. By 1990 the Soviet Union politically, economically and in national terms was an empire in crisis and turmoil. Gorbachev had sought unsuccessfully to lead a perilous transition from Brezhnev`s authoritarian, centralized system toward pluralism and market socialism. He had moved far beyond Khrushcev in encouraging a pitiless examination of previous Soviet policies and history, inducing many to question sharply the legitimacy of the Soviet regime. In the spring and summer of 1990, amid unredeemed promises of drastic economic change, political reform and national disintegration accelerated. With the Supreme Soviet Boris Yeltsin, favoring radical reform, helped organize a left-wing opposition to Gorbachev, supported on most issues by Andrei Sakharov. On April 23, Gorbachev met with Yeltsin and leaders of eight other republics at a dacha at Novo Ogarevo near Moscow.
